What is a 4K projector?

[top]

4K UHD Projectors are a new addition to the line up. With realistic life like image quality, 4K projectors are the next level in projection. The high detailed 4K resolution produces an extra sharp, extra clear image, even on the larger screens sizes available today. Though resolution improvements in the past have made small improvements such as the change from HD to FULLHD, 4K represents a huge leap forward with a resolution 4 times that of FULLHD. This means one 4K projector would be producing the same detail as 4 FULL HD projectors combined!

The new range of 4K projectors have been released in time to coincide with the release of the next generation Xbox and Playstation 4K compatible game consoles. Many streaming apps now offer 4K movies and even pay TV service Foxtel has 4K movies and 4K sport content available.

What are the benefits of a 4K projector?

[top]

The real benefit of 4K projector is the incredibly high detail level it produces. A 4K image features 3840 pixels horizontally and 2160 pixels vertically, working out to approximately 8.3 million pixels, four times that of a FULL HD projector. This produces an incredibly sharp and detailed image, even on very large screens.

As the volume of 4K content available continues to rise, purchasing a 4K projector can be considered a more ‘future-proof’ option in comparison to a FULL HD projector. Most major streaming apps now offer a large amount of film and tv shows in the 4K resolution, new films are usually released on 4K Blu-ray disks, new game consoles such as the Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 are 4K, and there are several 4K channels available on cable television (Foxtel).

Are there any down sides of 4K projectors?

[top]

Being new technology, 4K projectors can cost a bit more than a HD or FULL HD projector. Whilst not long ago a 4K projector would cost well over $10,000 new releases are coming out all the time, some well below the $2000 mark.

4K UHD Projectors produce an incredible amount of resolution, which means incredibly small pixels... and lots of them! With so many pixels it can be challenging to offer a good level of adjustments, such as lens shift or keystone correction. Many 4K projectors have minimal adjustments however technology is constantly evolving and this will always improve. Due to the high resolution the 4K resolution tends to feature a slower response time than lower resolutions. This is of no concern when watching films but may be noticeable when playing fast pace 4K games. There have been 4K gaming projectors released recently with specialised 'gaming modes' to assist in speeding up response times.

What is the difference between a True 4K, 4Ke, and 4K Compatible projector?

[top]

In the projector industry there are 3 main types of 4K projectors.

  • 4K Compatible Projectors
  • 4Ke (4K Enhanced or Pro-UHD) Projectors
  • 4K (True 4K) Projectors

4K Compatible Projectors often have a native Full HD resolution but with the ability to receive 4K signals. The projector will condense the received 4K signal down to the projectors native resolution to display the image. This type of projector tends to be cheaper whilst still offering the ‘future-proof’ benefits of being able to display 4K content.

4Ke Projectors (also called 4K Enhanced or Pro-UHD) are commonly used by LCD projector brands like Epson. 4Ke Projectors utilise 2 FULL HD chips that shift (or vibrate) to create an image with a detail level that approximates 4K. Whilst the image on these models can be brilliant (and in some cases even rival that of some True4K projectors) the pixels are not distinct, so the detail level is lower.

True 4K Projectors display the 3840x2160 4K resolution with distinct pixels. This means you can actually see each and every one of the (approx.) 8.3 million pixels. True 4K projectors tend to still utilise a pixel shifting system, like with 4Ke projectors, however their distinct pixels provide improved detail and are the true definition of a 4K resolution.
