Projector Blog : Should I buy a Smart or Dumb Projector?
What is a Smart Projector?
Just like most modern-day Smart TV's, a Smart Projector is a device that has built-in streaming capabilities, allowing you to access various apps and services directly from the projector. You simply turn the projector on and use the projectors remote control to navigate to your desired streaming service (ie Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc.).
What is a Dumb Projector?
A Dumb Projector is a traditional projector that does not have built-in streaming capabilities, they are similar to a typical computer monitor in how they function. You will need to connect an external device, such as a laptop, streaming stick, or Blu-ray player, to the projector in order to display content.
Smart or Dumb - The Comparison
Smart Projectors
- Low Clutter - No need for an extra device to access streaming services.
- Convenience - You can access your favorite streaming services directly from the projector.
- Cost - Smart Projectors can be more cost-effective than purchasing a separate streaming device.
- Performance - Inbuilt AndroidTV hardware may feature less memory or processing power, making them feel sluggish or slow.
- Software Longevity - Inbuilt AndroidTV hardware cannot be switched out for newer versions, leading to potential obsolescence.
- App Licensing - Some streaming apps may have licensing restrictions or limitations on smart projectors.
- Audio - As audio is handled by the projector itself, it may not provide the best audio experience compared to a dedicated sound system.
Dumb (Traditional) Projectors
- Cost - Better raw specifications for the price. Many traditional projectors offer better overall picture quality.
- Infinite O/S Life - No onboard software to become outdated. Just upgrade your streaming device as needed.
- Flexibility - Can be used with a variety of external devices, offering more options for content sources.
- Audio - Display sources can be connected directly to surround sound systems for a better audio experience.
- Clutter - An external streaming device or player must be connected to the projectors HDMI port.
- Multiple Remotes - The projector and streaming device each have their own remote controls.
- Bulk - Traditional projectors can be bulkier and take up more space than smart projectors.
Our recommendation
Smart Projectors are excellent for those who want a hassle-free experience and don't want to deal with external streaming devices. They offer a clean, cable free solution for your home entertainment needs and are extremely popular in bedrooms and apartments.
Dumb (Traditional) Projectors still lead the way in terms of performance and flexibility. They are ideal for those who want the best picture quality, audio experience, and the ability to upgrade their streaming devices as technology evolves. For typical home theatre rooms a traditional projector is the way to go.
